DAL DHOKLI  - A Traditional Gujarati One Pot Meal 

Dal Dhokli is a very famous Gujarati dish which has tur or arhar dal and wheat flour as a main ingredient.  It is a one pot meal typically enjoyed on Sundays in the Gujarati Household.  Just one dish can be satisfying and need no other companion or a side dish. Here is my Mother's Dal Dhokli recipe cooked in my house.  I request don't skip any of the ingredients listed below so that you get yummy Dal Dhokli. Most of the ingredients are easily available at home. 




Ingredients 

For the Dhokli: 

  • Make a dough from 1.5 cup wheat flour
  • 1/2 tsp haldi powder
  • 1/2 tsp Kashmiri red chill
  • 1/2 tsp of dhania jeera powder
  • 2 tsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water to knead the dough (You can to make the dough similar to one you make for the roti) 

For the Dal 
  • 1.5 cup tur/arhar dal
  • 1 tablespoon of oil 
  • 1 tablespoon of ghee 
  • 1/2 teaspoon each of mustard seeds and jeera
  • 2 pinch of hing 
  • 2 cloves 
  • few curry leaves 
  • 1 small piece of dal chini 
  • 2 tablespoon of boiled peanuts 
  • handful of cashews for the dal and few for garnish 
  • 1/2 teaspoon haldi powder
  • 1.5 teaspoon Kashmiri red chilli powder 
  • salt 
  • 2 tablespoon of sugar (you can also replace it with jaggery) 
  • 1/2 lemon juice 
  • Garnish with pomegranate and coriander leaves 

Method: 

  • Wash and pressure cook the tur dal, put groundnut in a small bowl in the same pressure cooker. Once the dal is cooked, release the pressure and blend the dal and get the smooth texture. You can add use hand blender or put the dal in a mixture jar to get a smooth texture if you do not want to put too much efforts with hand whisker 
  • Keep oil for heating and make the tadka by adding mustard, jeera, cloves, dalchini and hing 
  • Add haldi and red chili powder to the tadka and pour tadka the dal. Add salt, sugar, boiled peanuts and cashew to the dal. Cook the dal on low flame for 10-15 mins. 
  • Till the dal is boiling...you can make the Dhokli dough. In a bowl add add wheat flour, salt, all the spices, methi and water. Roll thin roti from the dough an cut into diamond or any shapes you love 
  • Traditionally the Dhokli is put directly in the dal but to get nice soft properly cooked Dhokli boil 2 cups of water and put the Dhokli one by one in it. Once the Dhokli rises up its cooked. Don't boil it too much. Boil it for 3 to 4 mins only
  • Now add Dhokli to the boiling dal and gently mix it.  Let it cook for 5 to 6 mins till the flavours of dal gets infused in the dal. 
  • Lastly heat the 1 tablespoon of ghee add curry leaves and put it in dal
  • Close the gas add lemon juice, serve the dal Dhokli hot and garnish it with pomegranate, cashew nuts coriander leaves and serve hot



Notes: 

Garnish the dal and don't serve it with plain. You can also garnish it with fruits like Pineapple, Grapes, Apple and grated coconut 
Boiled peanut is a another important ingredient which gives great flavour to the dal
Many people add besan in the Dhokli dough 
Quick boil to Dhokli separately helps to get nice soft Dhokli. Traditionally Dhokli is put directly in the dal
